Introduction to the IMO HK Committee

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship mathematics competition for high school (pre-university) students and is held annually in a different country or region. IMO first came into being in 1959 in Romania, involving 7 countries in Eastern Europe; gradually it becames an important world class event with more than 100 participating countries and regions. China joined IMO in 1985 while HK in 1988 and Macau in 1990. Each team comprises a Leader, a Deputy Leader and 6 students at pre-university level.

The goals of IMO are:

  • to provide a meeting place for mathematically talented young people from all over the world;
  • to promote among students an interest in mathematics;
  • to promote among teachers an exchange of ideas on the development of math education; and
  • to establish personal and friendly contacts among students and teachers as a means of contribution to international understanding.

The IMO is a prestigious international event among all mathematical competitions. National leaders and celebrities serve as Patrons and officiate at the opening and closing ceremonies.

In Hong Kong, the IMO Hong Kong Committee was founded in 1986 under the auspice of Prof KP Shum who is also the co-founder of the Hong Kong Mathematics Society (HKMS). Since then it undertook the voluntary work of selecting and training talented students to participate in IMO, operating as a sub-committee affiliated to HKMS, both chaired by Prof KP Shum for a substantive period of time. The IMOHKC stages a territory-wide Preliminary Selection Contest every year, provides free training for talented students, and funded their passages to take part in the IMO.
